General Sessions Court

There are two divisions in South Carolina Circuit Courts – Common Pleas and General Sessions. Common Pleas is commonly referred to as civil court and handles civil matters.

The Court of General Sessions handles adult felony and misdemeanor criminal cases with a penalty of more than 30 days or a $500 fine. The maximum sentence in General Sessions Court is the death penalty.

In the 15th Judicial Circuit, our office handles all the General Sessions cases in Circuit Court and certain misdemeanor cases in Magistrate Court in Horry and Georgetown counties.
