One of Horry County’s own recently received recognition for his leadership and commitment to create opportunities for college students.
Walter Hill, the Director of the Horry County Museum, was among those named one of Coastal Carolina University’s (CCU) 2026 Changemakers.
Hill was presented with honor during CCU’s A Taste for Learning fundraiser Monday, June 1, hosted by the Department of Anthropology and Geography in the Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences.
“It is a great honor to be recognized for the work we have done to be a part of student success and provide a forum for students to experience real world museum work and give them a conduit to give back to their community through a public museum setting," Hill said on receiving the award.
Hill was selected in appreciation for his longstanding support of and partnership with the Department of Anthropology and Geography. The department highlighted the opportunities he has created for students through internships and hands-on museum experience in areas such as collections management, curation, interpretation, museum education, and public programming.
As Director of the Horry County Museum, Hill plays a key role in preserving and promoting Horry County’s history and cultural heritage through exhibits, educational initiatives, and community programming at both the Horry County Museum and the L.W. Paul Living History Farm.
“Museums should strive to be a part of their community. This means representing, engaging, and partnering with community members. As Director of the Museum, I have always tried to be of service to our residents, visitors and schools,” Hill expressed.
