As the days get shorter and weather turns cooler, Horry County Public Safety departments encourage residents to practice wintertime safety.

Many households will begin switching their air conditioners and fans to heat settings. Before you adjust the thermostat or put a log on the fire, check to make sure everything is order. Proper maintenance of heat sources is encouraged to mitigate against any potential fire hazards.

Horry County Fire Rescue recommends checking smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors and ensure they are in working order. If you need smoke alarms, you can request them from HCFR here: https://www.horrycountysc.gov/departments/fire-rescue/forms/

For those who plan to travel for the holidays, it's a good time to make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes some cold weather items. If your vehicle breaks down on the road, having blankets, food and water in your car kit can keep you warm and safe while you wait for assistance.

Horry County Emergency Management encourages residents to also be prepared for power outages during cold weather. Though hurricanes are the most likely hazard to cause power disruptions in Horry County annually, cold weather and ice storms can occur. Update your emergency kit with warm clothes, blankets and an ice scraper.

With the holidays approaching, Horry County Police Department reminds everyone to be mindful of shopping bags left inside vehicles and packages left at the door. Don't let any grinches steal your Christmas - always remember to "beep before you sleep" and lock your doors at night.

It's a time of year for giving and helping those in need. If you see anyone needing assistance from Horry County Public Safety personnel, don't hesitate to call Horry County 911.
