Stormwater ponds are critical for controlling flooding and protecting water quality by slowing runoff, capturing sediment, and filtering pollutants. However, in order to work effectively and stay in state and local compliance, they need proper and regular maintenance. In Horry County, most of the 1,500 –1,600 stormwater ponds are privately owned by HOAs, businesses, or property owners.
Property owners, HOAs, and businesses are responsible for maintaining their ponds to keep them functioning effectively. Regular inspections, debris removal, and vegetation management are key to protecting your pond and your community.
Horry County Stormwater prioritizes maintaining public infrastructure, like roads and public drainage systems, to benefit everyone. The county encourages pond owners to conduct self-inspections on retention ponds in their neighborhoods semi-annually or after large storm events.
A few ways these inspections can benefit your community include: maximizing storage capacity, tackling erosion before it becomes a financial burden, and controlling algae before it becomes a major concern.
The County offers resources, guidance, and enforcement to help ensure proper maintenance of private stormwater systems. Together, we can protect our water quality, reduce flooding risks, and preserve our environment.
Stormwater pond management professionals are also invited to attend the 2025 Regional Stormwater Pond Management Conference being held in February in Myrtle Beach.
