With the turn of the calendar to a new month, so begins hurricane season. As with the last several seasons, an above-normal amount of activity is forecast. Regardless of how many storms actually form, it only takes one storm impacting Horry County to make it a bad season.

Horry County Emergency Management encourages residents to prepare for tropical weather before any storms are in our forecast. Taking the time to prepare now will provide the best chances of mitigating impacts and recovering faster. Consider these actions to prepare:

Understand Your Risk

Know what wind and water threats you can face at your home or business. Note any nearby water features. Also, review your insurance policies and understand what is covered by your policies. Flooding is not typically covered in standard homeowner’s insurance policies. Look into purchasing flood insurance.

Know Your Zone

Evacuations zones across the South Carolina coast were updated last year. Learn if you are in a zone and create an evacuation plan focusing on when you would leave, where you would go, and how you would get there.

Create A Kit

Assemble an emergency kit with at least three days’ worth of supplies. Remember water and nonperishable food, but also specialty items like medications, cash (small bills), and items for any pets.

Write A Plan

Create a family disaster and communications plan. Walkthrough different scenarios and discuss actions to take with the family. Share your plan with loved ones out of the area.

Follow Credible Sources

Information and misinformation are in abundance when a storm is in the forecast. Follow local government agencies and local news outlets for primary information. Only share information that is vetted and you know to be true. Look to the county’s website and HCEMD social profiles for updates.

Preparedness does not need to be complicated or expensive. Little steps – like buying batteries for flashlights – can put you in better readiness shape than you were before. Proper preparedness does take some thought though, so take the time now to get ready. Start by visiting Horry County Emergency Management's webpages.
