Myrtle Beach International Airport is celebrating its latest expansion with the grand opening of six new gates.
The $93.5 million, 50,000-square-foot expansion to concourse A took just 17 months to complete. The first steel was set on Dec. 2, 2024, nearly one year to the day before the Dec. 1, 2025, ribbon-cutting.
“We are just thrilled that this project was able to come in at about six weeks under time and about $4.5 million under budget,” says Judi Olmstead, Horry County’s Director of Airports.
The original budget for the expansion project was $98 million. The remaining funds are being used to continue similar improvements throughout other areas of the airport.
Myrtle Beach International Airport currently works with 10 airlines with flights to more than 50 destinations.
The terminal was designed to enhance the travel experience for those passing through featuring new flooring, updated signage, modern restrooms, and additional concessions.
Visitors can lounge on updated furniture while taking in the sights of airliners as they take off and land on the runway.
Preserved palms stand within the benches of the terminal, incorporating the beauty of Myrtle Beach’s landscape.
The electrochromic windows that make up the picturesque curtain wall offer both comfort and efficiency, auto-tinting as the sun moves westward. A clear story of windows lining the ceiling also allows for natural light to illuminate the gates below.
Travelers will also enjoy greater comfort in updated facilities, including a family restroom, a mother’s room, and an ADA-compliant restroom equipped with an adult changing table.
The concourse updates extend beyond the new terminal with flooring upgrades, restroom updates and new furniture throughout existing gates as well.
Beyond improving the travel experience, the expansion also provides a renewed opportunity for current carriers and airlines interested in offering service to and from MYR.
“We are always conscious of retaining our current air service. We have wonderful airline partners here and so we are just looking forward to the future, and I believe this lays out Myrtle Beach to become an international destination again,” says Olmstead.
With the terminal expansion now complete, the focus shifts to future improvements, including a runway reconstruction project and expanded security screening and baggage areas.
“What we have on the plate right now represents over a $300M investment in new infrastructure for our community. That is a tremendous feat,” says Horry County Administrator Barry Spivey. “Not one dollar of our local property tax revenue is being spent in any of those projects. It’s being funded by the people who use this facility, as well as our partners at the federal and state level.
The airport also recently added additional parking to meet the growing demand from travelers.
