Horry County has selected former-Captain Mick Kathman to serve as the next Deputy Chief of Police for HCPD's Operations Bureau.

A 21-year veteran of law enforcement, Kathman has been with HCPD since 2004 and served in a number of different roles and units.

Kathman’s most recent assignments were as the Captain of the Criminal Investigations Division (2023 to present) and Lieutenant of the Support Services Division (2019 to 2023).

Over the course of his career thus far, our newly-minted DC has also completed extensive leadership training, including the FBI-LEEDA leadership trilogy and National Command and Staff College.

As Kathman moves into the executive role for the Operations Bureau, units assigned to the bureau will somewhat evolve.

Going forward, the Operations Support Bureau will include Criminal Investigations, Special Operations Units, Narcotics & Vice, Street Crimes, Crisis Intervention, Crime Scene, Drug Lab, Records, Property & Evidence, and Digital Forensics.

The Administration Bureau, led by existing Deputy Chief Justin Wyatt will retain Community Services, Environmental, Animal Care Center, Beach Patrol, Airport, Regulatory, Traffic Enforcement, School Resource Officers, Technology, Hiring & Recruiting, Logistics, Training, and Office Staff.

The Patrol Bureau, which includes manning four—very soon to be five—police precincts across the county and responding to calls for service, will continue under the executive leadership of Deputy Chief Lance Winburn.

Kathman will begin his new role immediately. Promotions to fill his previous role, and address any subsequent needs, will be forthcoming.
