On Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, Team Horry joined with partners from across Horry County, neighboring counties, and the state to break ground on a future place of refuge for those who face domestic violence.

After years of strategizing and fundraising, and support from a variety of grant sources, including the American Rescue Plan Act, the shelter is closer than ever to becoming reality.

Partnership ultimately made the project possible. Funding for the shelter was raised through direct donations to the Family Justice Center of Georgetown and Horry Counties, as well as $750,000 in American Rescue Plan Act grant funds.

It seems only fitting that this important step forward occur in October, also known as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

May this serve as a profound reminder to the Horry County community—if you see something, say something. Together, we see and we serve.
