With more cold weather days in the forecast, it is essential to take the proper precautions to prevent fire damage and injury.
Below are a few ‘Do’s and ‘Don’ts’ to help ensure you stay safe this winter.
DO’S
- Make sure your home has working smoke alarms.
- Test carbon monoxide detectors if you use fuel-burning heating equipment.
- Have an emergency escape plan in the event of fire.
- Inspect your chimney regularly and have it professionally cleaned.
- Monitor local media and follow Horry County Emergency Management for the last weather forecast.
DON’TS
- Never use a generator inside a house or garage.
- Do not store any fuel inside your house.
- Never keep electric space heaters plugged in when you’re not home or going to bed. Avoid electric cords.
- Do not use space heaters or any other kind of heating equipment within three feet of anything that could catch fire.
- Do not heat your home with an oven or anything with an open flame.
- Do not smoke inside your home.
