Beach renourishment operations have begun along the Grand Strand in North Myrtle Beach. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Charleston District, started sand placement on Wednesday evening, December 17, between beach access points at 46th Avenue North and 51st Avenue North.
Work has continued through 55th Avenue North and will continue progressing southward. Weather and equipment availability permitting, operations will begin in the City of Myrtle Beach in February 2026, followed by Garden City and Surfside Beach in April 2026.
The renourishment has been planned since December 2024. At that time USACE, Charleston District, awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company to place two million cubic yards of material on Myrtle Beach, equivalent to 200,000 dump trucks, along 26 miles of coastline. The renourishment is funded entirely by the USACE and will cost $72 million.
Hurricanes Ian, September 2022, and Debby, August 2024, both caused severe erosion on Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina coast. This renourishment is intended to reduce the damage caused to the infrastructure.
USACE, Charleston District, has a tracker: Renourishment Progress , which will be updated daily to show the progress of the project.
