General Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under minimal supervision, is responsible for organizing, planning, coordinating, administering and evaluating diversified and comprehensive athletic programs for the Parks and Recreation Department at the designated Recreation District location. The Athletic Coordinator must be capable organizing, planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating diversified and comprehensive athletic programming in a designated district to best meet the needs of citizens of Horry County. The Athletic Coordinator develops professional relationships with community groups and individuals to foster strong partnerships. This individual is a self-starter who is active and who enjoys coaching, refereeing, scorekeeping, creating rosters, and interacting with children, families and seniors. Ensures all work is conducted within budgetary constraints and according to County Policy, codes and standards of quality under the supervision. Assists as needed with additional duties and responsibilities. Work involves the exercise of initiative, sound judgment, and discretion in the performance of duties. Assignments are in the form of general outline or desired results, with methods and routines expected to be developed and implemented as appropriate. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Duties for this Position
  • Develops and facilitates programs for all athletics within the designated district.
  • Plans special events.
  • Develops programs with emphasis on physical activity, nutrition education and character development
  • Hires and trains staff and supervises site supervisors and coordinates with other program coordinators.
  • Assists and coordinates with recruitment of instructors, officials, and volunteers for programs.
  • Manages and directs staff on implementing athletic programs in his/her control and coordinates with other recreation staff with programs not under their direct supervision.
  • Oversees participant discipline and conducts parent meetings.
  • Supervises the implementation of programs and activities countywide.
  • Monitors financial and activity reports and submits reports, including set-up, fees, timely payment, follow-up of non-payment, breakdown, clean-up, etc.
  • Assesses and evaluates community recreation needs and programs.
  • Obtain quotes, enter requisitions and perform ordering of supplies, materials or services as directed by their supervisor within county policy.
  • Inspects facilities and submits reports or work order requests to Director of Parks and Recreation.
  • Perform work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the County Safety Program.
  • Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practices to Supervisor.
  • Designs and prepares communications such as flyers, banners, advertising, etc. to the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with organizations /groups, government agencies, and the public.
  • Represents the department in County, State or National organizations as directed by the Director of Parks and Recreation.
  • May be required to work after normal hours as necessary.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends for scheduled programs.
  • May be asked to perform light custodial activity including trash, sweeping floor, and wiping counters as it relates to programming.
  • All other duties assigned related to the job.
  • Keeps informed of changes in operation philosophies and policies of the County and continually reviews department policies to ensure that any changes in County philosophy or practice are appropriately incorporated.
  • Provide friendly, timely and responsive customer service.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Practices continuous learning through individual study, classroom training, seminars and conferences.
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required. 2-or-4 year degree in Education or Recreation related field required OR has combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • A South Carolina or North Carolina Driver’s license. First Aid, AED and CPR certification or required within 6 months of employment. .
  • Knowledgeable of the required records, charts, documents, and related information required by the County and is able to maintain proper data and information as required.
  • Has the ability to make sound, educated decisions. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has skill in the use of computers, email, office programs, and learn new programs as needed.
  • Is able to develop, interpret, and apply policies and procedures. Has the ability to communicate and interact with people from a very wide variety of backgrounds as well as education levels.
  • Bachelors degree in Recreation Administration or related field preferred.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience and scheduling and budgeting recreation activities preferred.
  • Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check.
