Horry County is seeking a Co-Deputy Planning Director to assist in the daily operations and management of our large, fast-paced planning department. Horry County is located along the South Carolina coast and is part of one of the fastest growing metropolitan statistical area in the nation. The ideal candidate will have managerial planning experience to support our rapidly growing community.

- The Co-Deputy Planning Director will be under the supervision of the Planning Director and serve in their role in their absence. This position will be immersed in and responsible for many current and long-range planning activities, including, but not limited to the development and maintenance of the Horry County Comprehensive Plan, development and rezoning review, drafting regulatory changes, preparation of technical memos and presentations, researching specific planning issues and developing reports, and managing special projects.
- Performs as an integral part of the Planning Department to assist in assigning workloads and establishing work schedules, directing and supervising duties of assigned staff, reviewing the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy.
- Ensures all Planning and Zoning related items before elected and appointed officials and community groups are fully vetted, well prepared, and professionally prepared and presented.
- Responsible for guiding the preparation and maintenance of the Horry County Comprehensive Plan.
- Prepares reports and presentations of planning project activities and recommendations.
- Conducts and coordinates research with various government agencies and organizations regarding economic, social and physical factors affecting growth in the County.
- Assists in the preparation and management of the annual budget and performance measures for the Planning Department. Reviews and approves requisitions.
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including monthly reports, budget requests, job applications, performance appraisals, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals, such as the County Administrator, County Council, Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, subordinates, County department heads and employees, attorneys, engineers, consultants, utility companies, and the general public.
- Attends meetings, seminars and conferences as appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Position Minimum Requirements

- Requires a Master’s Degree in city and regional planning, or other related field of with at least 5 years of experience, most of which have been in a managerial position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. AICP certification preferred.
