General Job Description
Assistant Public Defender in the 15th Circuit (Horry & Georgetown Counties). Majority of responsibilities will be in Horry County.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
This is an in-office position with the vast majority of work time spent in the office, at the county detention center, or in court.
- Duties for this Position

- Comprehend and analyze discovery documentation.
- Prepare cases for trial.
- Counsel clients and explain legal concepts, trial strategies, and plea offers.
- Negotiate with prosecutors.
- Make compelling and well-reasoned motions and arguments before the court and compelling arguments before a trial jury.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with clients, witnesses involved in the case and court personnel.
- Utilize the investigator, interns and other support staff appropriately.
- Seek assistance from experts appropriate to the case.
- Attend and participating in training seminars, conferences, and staffing sessions.
- Abide by all Public Defender and County policies and procedures outlined in manual including but not limited to attendance, punctuality and professional dress code.
- Performing other related works as required.
- Position Minimum Requirements

- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time and lift and manipulate items between 20 and 50 pounds on occasion.
- Ability to work well with administrative staff and attorneys in a true Team First environment and culture.
- Trial experience preferred but not required.
- Juris Doctorate
