General Job Description

Job location is available at the Main Administrative Office, Carolina Forest, and South Strand Recreation Centers. Under the general supervision of the District Supervisor, performs manual labor and semiskilled work in the landscaping and maintenance of Parks and Recreation including, but not limited to keeping the buildings and grounds in a specific District clean, safe and well maintained. This includes athletic fields, boat landings, planted areas, right-of-ways, trails, Recreation and/or Community Center(s) and other grounds. Work involves the exercise of initiative, sound judgment, and discretion in the performance of duties. Assignments are in the form of general outline or desired results, with methods and routines expected to be developed and implemented as appropriate. Also involves using a variety of procedures, power and hand tools, soaps, chemicals, waxes, and various machines to maintain properties, including, but not limited to, mowers, weed whackers, blowers and trucks. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Duties for this Position
  • • Performs routine custodial services in Recreation buildings including sweeping, mopping, polishing, floor care, dusting, vacuuming, spot cleaning, replacing light bulbs, and light handy-work. • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and locker rooms following established practices and procedures. Stocks areas with appropriate supplies and notifies supervisor of appropriate needs for supplies. • Notifies supervisor of needed work orders and areas where assistance is needed. • Performs routine seasonal grounds keeping duties, including flower and foliage care and planting, raking or blowing leaves, mowing grass, mulching and removing weeds. • Prioritizes assignments in order to meet objectives effectively, efficiently and to ensure deadlines are met. • Plants annuals and shrubbery in flower beds, trims, and shapes shrubs and trees as directed. • Performs the application of fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide and other chemical applications. Loads and mixes chemicals, operates application equipment such as tank sprayer, backpack pump, and hand spreader, and posts notices warning of application. Records and maintains application records. • Waters plants and trees etc. as directed. • Maintains grounds by inspecting, painting, cleaning, repairing or replacing equipment, installing and repairing fences, signs, tables, ball fields and other fixtures and structures at park and recreation facilities. • Trims and edges around walks, flower beds, fences, etc. as directed. • May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions. May be assigned to report at a different time and location to perform different duties as necessary. Generally works between the hours of 6am- 3pm Monday – Friday. • Perform work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the County Safety Program. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to Supervisor. • May be required to work after normal hours as necessary to meet deadlines or due to unexpected situations requiring immediate response. • Clean restrooms, pick up litter, dispose of trash, sweep or blow debris. • Paint structures as directed. • Inspects equipment and facilities, conducts preventative maintenance, services equipment and ensures safety. • Operates mowers, trucks, cars transport equipment, weed eater, edger, leaf blower and a variety of power tools. • Loads and unloads supplies, furniture, office equipment, and materials for Parks & Rec. functions and special events. • Maintains equipment such as sharpening tools, weed eaters, cutters, edging tools, blades and shears. Makes minor repairs to equipment. • Makes minor repairs to irrigation system including changing sprinkler heads. • Properly preparing athletic fields for play including dragging fields, chalking, painting, setting bases, anchoring goals, and other functions as directed. • Perform other duties as assigned. • Provide friendly, timely and responsive customer service.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Has combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. A South Carolina or North Carolina Driver’s license. Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check.
  • • Practices continuous learning through individual study, classroom training, seminars andconferences. • Acceptable level of knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to grounds keeping and maintenance work. • Acceptable level of knowledge of proper use of chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides. • Acceptable level of knowledge of cultivation, weed control, seeding and planting of trees, and nursing beds. • Knowledgeable of the language and terminology used within the field of recreation management. • Knowledgeable of the required records, charts, documents, and related information required by the County and is able to maintain proper data and information as required. • Is able to develop, interpret, and apply policies and procedures. • Has the ability to communicate and interact with people from a very wide variety of backgrounds as well as education levels. • Has the ability to make sound, educated decisions. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. • Has skill in the use of computers, email, office programs, and learn new programs as needed. • Has considerable knowledge of use and care of motorized equipment and hand/power tools used in grounds work. • Keeps informed of changes in operation philosophies and policies of the County and continually reviews department policies to ensure that any changes in County philosophy or practice are appropriately incorporated.
