General Job Description

Provides professional assistance to library patrons of all ages throughout the County who have research and technology needs at all levels of complexity on a multitude of subjects. Provides direct assistance to patrons and performs circulation duties as necessary. Carries out social media and marketing for the Library. Reports to Branch Librarian or Automation Librarian.

Duties for this Position
  • Provides research assistance to patrons system wide, in person, over the phone, via email, and on social media
  • Acts as manager in the Branch Librarian’s absence
  • Serves as the second call, as needed, to answer the Alarm Company for building security
  • Assists customers on branch computers and on personal devices brought to the library
  • Possesses excellent knowledge and effective use of technology and digital resources
  • Provides programming and events for patrons in technology and digital tools
  • Plans ahead to offer programs and events focused on adult and family interests
  • Maintains relationship with sister branch and provides support as needed
  • Maintains and contributes appropriate content for Library social media accounts as assigned
  • Responds to social media messages and comments
  • Creates marketing materials to promote the Library
  • Trains library staff to use technology and digital resources
  • Assists with collection maintenance
  • Designs and maintains Discovery Kits and other “Library of Things”
  • Oversees Personalized Book Picks service for branch and sister branch
  • Gathers and delivers materials for Library’s BookShare boxes
  • Serves as a liaison with community groups as needed
  • Performs circulation tasks as needed
  • Shelves materials
  • Performs other duties as required
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Masters’ Degree in Library Science supplemented by one year of reference or public service experience in a public library, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Applicants who have enrolled in an ALA accredited MLS degree program, and have completed or enrolled in at least half of the classes necessary to complete the degree, will be considered so long as they have at least one year of public library employment
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and office equipment
  • Must be able to pass required pre-employment physical and background check
  • Must be able to follow Horry County Government and Library policies and procedures
  • Current valid driver’s license
  • Must possess or be eligible for a SC certificate of Librarianship from the SC State Library
