General Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Under limited supervision, is responsible for supervising and directing daily activities of Public Works personnel engaged in daily maintenance of County roads and drainage. Will effectively supervise crews, manage equipment and budgets used in the repair and upgrade of the County’s infrastructure. Ensures crews are compliant with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, all applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and approved construction and maintenance techniques.

Duties for this Position
  • SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSILITIES 1. Manages the pavement repair activities of the Public Works Department. Supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities with appropriate departments. 2. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed. 3. Performs other duties as directed. 4. Assists with the preparation of the annual department budget; prepares cost estimates for upcoming projects. 5. Investigates complaints of County residents; recommends and/or assigns action to be taken and follows up on such action. 6. Ensures that routine maintenance and repairs are performed on vehicles and heavy equipment assigned to the pavement repair crew as required for safety and efficiency. 7. Assesses need for, innovates, creates specifications for, and procures a variety of heavy equipment used in road construction and maintenance activities. 8. Reads and interprets engineering plans and technical drawings pertinent to road and drainage issues. 9. Utilizes various types of equipment as necessary to accomplish tasks, including a vehicle, computer, printer, calculator, telephone, two-way radio, etc. 10. Performs computer data entry to record and/or retrieve various information. 11. Prepares a variety of routine reports as required. 12. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as immediate supervisor, co-workers, subordinates, and the general public.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Requires a high school diploma, or equivalent, and three to five years of experience in the road maintenance and construction field, supervisory experience is a plus; or any equivalent combination which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must have a valid commercial driver’s license (Class B). Must obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license within six (6) months of accepting job.
