General Job Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for supervision of the Afterschool programs at Carolina Forest Recreation Center. Responsibilities include: overseeing, organizing, and planning activities for children ages 5-12 years old. Assists with games, special events, and programs under the countywide Recreation Department program. Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, must be capable of spending long periods of time patiently playing, supervising, assisting, and programing activities for children. The Recreation Leader develops relationships with community groups and individuals to foster strong positive customer feedback. Work involves the exercise of initiative, sound judgment, and discretion in the performance of duties. Performs a variety of customer service duties while interacting with families and children to ensure a pleasant experience at the facility as a representative of the Horry County Parks and Recreation Department. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Duties for this Position
  • Provide friendly, timely and responsive customer service.
  • Supervises childcare programs ensuring the safe, fun, high quality, developmentally-appropriate service is provided to all program participants. May be asked to assist with programs operating in facility including games, crafts, special events, childcare programs, athletic programs, community events, etc.
  • Administers general First Aid and appropriately fills out reports as needed.
  • Ensures playing surfaces are clear and safe and programs are prepared for the activity. Assists with set up, clean up, and storage for programs, including the performance of light custodial duties such trash pick-up, sweep floor, wipe counters off etc.
  • Ensures proper operation and maintenance of the facility and equipment inside and makes sure that the Center is in compliance with safety policies and procedures. Initiates and supervises safety measures for all activities.   • With assistance of other building staff, coordinates programs and activities with other departmental divisions, County agencies, community organizations and the general public. May be asked to assist with programs operating in facility including games, crafts, special events, childcare programs, athletic programs, community events, etc.
  • All other duties assigned related to the job.
  • Knowledge of preparing and assisting with recreational programs, athletic activities, clerical skills, and coordinating of recreational facilities preferred.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and learn computer programs including the use of online software, word processing, financial and registration software
  • Desire to contribute to a team environment. Critical thinking skills ability to problem solve in difficult situations. Demonstrated customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and take on responsibilities without being tasked
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Must have adequate knowledge of preparing and assisting with recreational programs, athletic activities, and coordinating of recreational facilities.
  • Must be at least 16 years or older.
  • College courses and teaching experiences are helpful but not required.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and physical.
