General Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY The Horry County Museum is a general history museum that focuses on the history, prehistory and natural history of Horry County, South Carolina. The Museum cares for a collection of artifacts and archival material and uses them in exhibits that tell stories of Horry’s past. The Museum also hosts family days, tours, and special programs. The Museum Assistant will perform a variety of complex administrative, secretarial and clerical duties in order to ensure effective and efficient office operations.

Duties for this Position
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES • Provides customer service through greeting at the front door, telephone service, and email questions. - Answers questions concerning museum activities, programs and exhibits - Will give directions and information to visitors concerning their visit to the area, historical information, museum activities, programs, and community events. • Routes telephone calls and messages to the appropriate recipient. - Answers and directs incoming telephones calls to the museum and answers information calls concerning museum activities, programs and scheduling of tours. • Collects and records information relating to visitors information including visitor surveys and through the door attendance. - Will compile monthly reports relating to this data. • Will assist with the Museum newsletter and serve as liaison to the Museum Membership program. • Assist in weekly deposits of Museum sales with finance and keeps Excel records of deposits. • Reports accounts monthly to museum director. • Maintains museum sales; including purchases, products received, daily sales, weekly deposits, credit card and cash sales, inventory, taxes and monthly reports. • Prepares and labels museum gift shop products. • Assists in the preparation of annual budget. • Assists in preparation of Accommodations Tax Requests. • Enter requisitions and check requests into MUNIS. • Enter and track contracts into MUNIS • Perform Budget transfers • Manage personal p-card transactions and financial reporting. • Provides assistance to department management, co-workers and the general public as required. • Meets all departmental employee standards, safety standards, and county standards. Acts as safety Coordinator including checking fire extinguishers and maintaining safe work environment. • Assists other staff in programs, events, and projects. • Reports to immediate supervisor. • Will be responsible for being the contact and liaison with the community calendars and social media events. Will be responsible for maintaining accurate and up to date postings of museum and farm events on those calendars. • Will work with the Director of the Museum to compile, organize and mail out Board packets and acts as liaison to the Museum Board of Trustees. • Under certain circumstances, will be required to assist museum and farm staff at various events or shows including onsite and offsite events. • May schedule volunteers for front desk and other volunteer tasks. • Will perform other duties as assigned. • Maintains records relating to current docent and County approved volunteers.

Verbal Aptitude Requires ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow and give verbal and written instructions. Must be capable of effective and efficient communication and have the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and educational levels. Numerical Aptitude Requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and to utilize mathematical formulas with ease to determine percentages and decimals, and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportions. Motor Coordination Requires hand/eye coordination to operate automated office equipment, farm equipment, motor vehicle, etc. Manual Dexterity Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Visual and or Color Discrimination Requires the ability to visually read information. Must have ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
