General Job Description

The Certified Addictions/Mental Health Counselor provides a range of psychological assessment, diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or case management services for individuals and groups within a correctional setting, as appropriate to the specific expectations of the position. Reports to and works under the direct guidance of the Treatment Director. May provide practical training and guidance to inmates and/or Peer Support staff, as required.

Duties for this Position
  • Provides counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy to participants as appropriate to the position; prepares treatment plans, discharge plans, and follow-up care programs; provides therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as required.
  • Collects data about participants through interviews, criminogenic assessments, case history, psychological tests, and/or observational techniques; evaluates data to identify causes of problems and to determine proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records or reports regarding the clients' histories and progress, services provided, or other required information.
  • Implement strategies that address primary and co-occurring disorders.
  • Recognize the participant's age as a relevant factor and applies appropriate decision­ making skills in the assessment, treatment, and care provided for the youthful offenders, and adult sentenced inmates.
  • Develops an understanding of the Therapeutic Community Model of treatment and utilizes best practices within that model.
  • Provides casework management of a specialized caseload, as appropriate to the requirements of the individual position.
  • Provides and/or arrange therapeutic interventions as appropriate for participants in both pre-trial and sentenced programs.
  • Interacts with Inmates that may be in a crisis condition and those with serious disturbance problems.
  • Follows up to determine reliability and validity of treatment used; makes recommendations regarding modification to services and service delivery.
  • Consults with other legal and treatment agencies and individuals in relation to participant records, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Consults with other therapists and related professional and Peer Support staff, as appropriate, in the performance of therapeutic and/or casework; refers clients to appropriate service agencies as required.
  • Participates in the review of clinical issues and program policies and procedures.
  • Participates in, leads, and/or coordinates training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.
  • May lead Peer Support in the performance of clinical duties.
  • Interacts with other agencies, professionals, and referral sources and presents a positive image of him/herself, the facility, and the program.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the Treatment Director or the JRLDC Programs & Services Director.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed for various program activities and facility requirements.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, or a directly related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Certification/Licensure as an ADC, LPC, or equivalent level.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that is above the minimum education requirement.
  • Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check.
