General Job Description

Members of the Part Time Tradesworker team are primarily responsible for helping prepare Horry County Parks & Recreation’s grounds, facilities, and parks for events such as athletic tournaments, races, community events, and meetings. This position must complete daily tasks under limited supervision. Hours will vary, but will primarily be on weekend mornings. Reports to the Recreation Superintendent.

Duties for this Position
  • Performs maintenance tasks in one of the following areas: Parks, beaches, recreation centers, and boat landings.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
  • Performs a variety of groundskeeping ballfield maintenance duties; grooms ball fields, lines ballfields, cleans dugouts, pick up trash around fields and complex, empty trash cans, clean restrooms and restock restroom supplies, greet tournament directors as necessary etc.
  • Communicates with supervisor on the condition of sites prior to, during, and after events as necessary.
  • Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes race series decorations; installs and removes banners; installs and removes pop-up tents, water stations, and cones/barricades; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
  • Operates a County vehicle; conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads materials, supplies and equipment as needed to complete assigned projects; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a variety of varied-purpose equipment and tools in the maintenance of the ballfields; operates a commercial-grade lawn mower, infield grooming machine, weed eater, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, pry bar or other equipment.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of infield grooming machines and County vehicles.
  • Recreation Leader assigned to Recreation Division to perform the following additional duties.
  • Maintains athletic fields; line/paints fields for a variety of sporting events; installs and takes up anchors, pitching rubbers, and home plate; builds pitching mounds and bullpens.
  • Performs all other duties as required
Position Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED; some experience in manual labor work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check
